It’s August…where are you on the goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the year? Have some of them fallen by the wayside? Did you just get too busy to make them happen? Well, we have good news! It’s not too late! There is still plenty of time left to make things happen. Research shows that only about 8% of people achieve the goals they set for themselves when making their New Year’s resolutions. If you do not fall into that group, first and foremost, don’t be hard on yourself for slacking off. As you can see, you are among the majority of the population. However, you can make the last part of the year the most successful! Dave Ramsey gives these tips on how to achieve your goals, so let’s get started!
- Decide what goal is most important to you and write it down. Focusing on one thing at a time makes it seem more attainable than a long list. Example: Did you want to sell your home this year? Were you hoping to be settled into a new home before the holiday season? Start there and write that down as your goal.
- Set reasonable benchmarks for yourself to help you reach this goal, and write them down. When you achieve small parts inside of the large goal, you feel like you are continuing to make progress which gives you the motivation to keep going. Back to our examples of buying or selling your home: For sellers, some benchmarks may be repairs or upgrades that need to be completed before selling like painting, gardening, or small repairs. If you are looking to buy, maybe your benchmarks could include narrowing down your search by choosing the location, size, and price range of the home. Another good benchmark for buyers is getting pre-qualified with a lender.
- Find someone to hold you accountable. Studies show that you are 95% more likely to reach your goal if you have an accountability partner. Find someone that will push you toward your goal rather than hold you back. If you are that person wanting to sell your home, you wouldn’t want to have an accountability partner that is always asking you to go out on the weekends. You would want someone that is willing to come over and help you paint or work in the garden. It’s always more fun to do these tasks with a friend! As for buying a new home, have someone that will push you to get out and scope out neighborhoods with you. They may notice things you had overlooked that help you make your decision on what area you would like to live in or what you are looking for in your next home.
- Be sure to reward yourself! Achieving goals can be hard work, so keep yourself moving forward with little treats. Taking time off from whatever the goal may be will keep you from feeling burned out and eventually giving up. After a hard day of getting your home ready to sell or a long day of house hunting, plan a night out with friends/family to relax and enjoy yourself!
