Has back to school chaos got you stressed out? Between getting them out the door, after school activities, homework, dinner, bedtime, and whatever else your family may have going on, it can be a bit crazy this time of year. The trick is to get into a routine, but the routine that worked last year, may not work this year. Here are some things to consider…
- Start with the fridge. First, tackle the outside and clear off the reminders of summer and make room for the artwork that your kids bring home from school. You will also need space for any parent reminders or other events you need to attend. Now, for the inside. Get rid of any outdated items or leftovers that, let’s face it, aren’t going to be touched now that we are back in school mode. This will make room for next-day lunches, quick breakfasts and on-the-go healthy snacks to grab as you and the kids run out the door.
- Remove any added stress from the closets. When picking out a school outfit, having too many options can be overwhelming. Clean out any clothes that your child has outgrown or that they just don’t wear. Less is better during a morning rush! As you are downsizing their wardrobe, take note of any clothes they may be in need of as the seasons change.
- Schedules and organization are very important! Keep a calendar of events so everyone is informed of where they need to be and what time. Also, have a designated area for all of the important papers, forms, etc. This way the whole family will know where to look both for the activities of the day as well as any papers that need to go back to school.
- Plan ahead for meals. Who wants to spend hours in the kitchen after a long day at school or work? To keep from spending too much money on take out, try preparing meals ahead of time. Double the recipe one night and throw the extra in the freezer for one of those long days. Another option is to throw some ingredients in the slow cooker as you are leaving in the morning. You will walk into a home that smells amazing and dinner will be ready to eat!
Cutting back on the chaos is all about planning ahead. We all know that the end of summer/back to school season throws us in survival mode every year. Just expect it, and be ready to take the necessary steps to get your life back on track.
