Amazon is coming to Aurora!
Obviously there is no reason for us to begin by introducing Amazon. We all know and love the online company that has everything from vitamins to furniture to groceries all in one place. We are able to add all we want to our carts, and with the click of a mouse, it can be at hour door within a matter of hours.
Amazon has not had a physical presence in Colorado…until now! They have chosen the Majestic Commercenter as the new home of the 452,400 square foot sorting center. Packages will arrive at this location and be sorted to send to U.S. Post Offices.
“We are hiring for hundreds of associates for our new package sortation center in Aurora,” Amazon spokeswoman Ashley S. Robinson reported.
The Denver Post featured a full-page ad saying they would be hiring part-time associates to work in this facility. They also created an online job portal for the available positions stating that the starting pay would be $13/hour. Hiring has begun for the sorting center but no mention of an opening date just yet. Outside of sorting associates, tech-related positions have been posted as well.
“Aurora’s location, workforce and business-friendly environment were key ingredients in attracting in the world’s largest e-commerce retailer to our city,” Aurora Economic Development Council president and CEO Wendy Mitchell said.
The 1,500 acre business park called Majestic Commercenter is also home to FedEx and U.S. Postal Service facilities. Amazon will be housed in what they have named “Building 29”.
Adding “sortation centers” as they are calling this location, cuts down on delivery time by 9 hours. Previously, purchases had to be made by 3:00 p.m. in order for the customer to receive the package 2 days later. By having more locations in various places across the country, Amazon has been able to move that deadline back to 11:59 p.m.
There was no mention of a fulfillment center coming to the area. Sixteen other sorting locations do have fulfillment centers nearby, so we can only hope it could be a possibility for the future.
We are excited for the opportunities available to local residents and to the growth this will bring to the area. Amazon is a well-known e-commerce retailer with a worldwide presence, and they have chosen to open their next facility right outside our back door!
