No matter how long you own your home, there are 4 phases of home ownership you are bound to experience whether you live there for a year or your entire adult life! Let’s discuss the phases more in depth…
- Unpacking and Settling In – Experts advise new homeowners to take their time with this phase. While it’s great to get all of the boxes unpacked and start living in your home, don’t be too eager to start remodeling. It’s wise to experience your home throughout each of the 4 seasons of the year before jumping into a big home improvement project. Take your time and get to know your home.
- Your House Becomes Your Home – The time it takes to get to this phase of home ownership varies from person to person. Once all of the boxes are unpacked, much of the decorating is done, and you have lived in your home for some time, you begin to feel the “home sweet home” feeling as you walk in the door after a long day. This phase is where you fall in love with your home.
- Time for some Updates – Phase 3 is where you start making major changes either to make your house work better for your lifestyle or to prepare it to sell. By the time you reach this point, you probably have some equity in your home. With that equity, you can choose to finance some big projects that will result in raising the value of your home. If it has taken you several years to get to this phase, you are probably looking at some necessary repairs as well. Whether selling or preparing your home to stay for a while, these repairs and updates (as long as they are done well) will prove to be beneficial in the long run.
- Signing on the Dotted Line – Usually after some time a major life change will give you the push to decide to move on to the next place you will call home. When you get to phase 4, it’s time to give your agent a call and sign those papers and put your house on the market. You have made your home a great place for the next buyer that is coming behind you, and you are moving on to a new chapter of life.
